New Jersey Medical Marijuana Certification Process

The certification process in New Jersey is similar to many other medical states. Patients will need to obtain a patient reference number from a licensed medical marijuana doctor first in order to apply with the state for a medical card.

  • 1
Schedule an appointment with a licensed medical marijuana doctor.
  • 2
Speak with the doctor to find out if you qualify.
  • 3
Obtain your patient reference number and apply with the state.
  • 4
Get your medical marijuana ID card and start purchasing at dispensaries!

The majority of doctors in the state are not comfortable with certifying patients for the New Jersey medical marijuana program because marijuana remains illegal on a federal level. In addition, a doctor must be registered with the state in order to certify patients for the program.

For these reasons it can sometimes be difficult for patients to find a doctor who will certify them. We currently offer online Telemedicine visits that allow you to be seen from the comfort and security of home, making the search for a doctor easy for you. All of our doctors are registered with the state and can legally certify you for the program. If you think that you have one of the qualifying medical conditions and have at least one type of proof, then you will most likely qualify. Our doctor can evaluate you, review any medical documentation you are able to provide, and issue your patient reference number so that you can apply for your card.

The next step after being certified by a doctor is to apply online with the New Jersey Department of Health. In order to apply, patients will need to have: – a Patient reference number – a New Jersey state-issued identification card (such as a driver’s license) – proof of New Jersey residency. If you're having trouble submitting your application to the state or any part of the registration process, we recommend contacting the state directly for support at 844-419-9712.
