There is no age requirement for a New Jersey medical marijuana card. Patients 18 years of age or older can become a patient easily but patients under 18 require a parent or guardian caregiver.

To qualify for medical marijuana in New Jersey, you must be diagnosed with at least one of the following debilitating medical conditions:

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
  • Anxiety
  • Cancer
  • Chronic Pain
  • Dysmenorrhea

  • Inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease
  • Intractable skeletal spasticity
  • Migraine
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Opioid Use Disorder
  • Positive status for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

To get certified for your New Jersey medical marijuana card you will need a New Jersey-issued Driver’s License or ID card along with proof of New Jersey residency such as a utility bill, bank statements or a document from IRS/NJ State Tax Office.

In addition, our providers require some form of medical proof of your condition. Proof includes ANY of the following:

  • pill bottles
  • prescriptions
  • medical records
  • office visit notes
  • letter/note from your doctor
  • X-ray (radiographic) reports that clearly state your name and the condition/injury

Once you are set, all you need to do is have your video evaluation with one of our licensed New Jersey MMJ doctors. This appointment usually lasts no more than 15-20 minutes.

The provider will speak to you about your current medical conditions and how medical cannabis can help. If approved, they will then enter your information into the registry and issue you your patient reference number- this number can then be used to register as a patient with the New Jersey Medicinal Marijuana Program. You will need to be evaluated by our provider once per year to remain certified.

Once you have received your Patient Reference Number from our provider, you can complete the online application.

After the application has been submitted, it will be reviewed for approval by the New Jersey Department of Health Division of Medicinal Marijuana. Patient applications may take up to 30 days to review at which time the state will follow up via Email regarding the status.

Once approved, you will be prompted to purchase your ID card. The fee is $100 (debit or credit) paid directly to the state online. Senior citizens, veterans and those who qualify for certain state and federal assistance programs are eligible for a discounted fee of $20.

After you are approved and payment has been submitted, you will receive your ID card in the mail within 7-10 days. The card will allow you to buy medical marijuana in New Jersey dispensaries (Alternative Treatment Centers) statewide. Registration is valid for 2 years.

Q: Will insurance cover the fees involved with the MMJ programs?

A: Unfortunately, no. This is because cannabis is still illegal at a federal level.

Q: How much marijuana will I be able to purchase or possess as a qualified, registered New Jersey cannabis patient?

Q: Where are the dispensaries (Alternative Treatment Centers) located?

A: Dispensaries are known are Alternative Treatment Centers (ATCs) in New Jersey and are located throughout the state. You may visit any ATC in New Jersey with your card. A list of ATCs can be found here.

Q: What is a caregiver?

A: A caregiver is a person selected by a registered patient to be able to purchase medical marijuana products from ATCs on their behalf in cases where the patient cannot physically go themselves. Patients may designate up to 2 caregivers and they can be added at any point in the registration process.

Q: What are the qualifications to become a caregiver?

A: To qualify as a Caregiver for the medical marijuana program in New Jersey, you must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be a New Jersey resident
  • Submit to a criminal history/background check

Q: How do I apply to be a caregiver and are there any fees involved?

A: Complete the Caregiver Application found here. There is a $100 fee for the caregiver ID card unless you are a senior citizen, veteran or qualify for certain state and federal assistance programs in which case the reduced fee is $20. Parents or legal guardians of minor patients will not be charged for their card. You will also be required to submit a fingerprint as well as a criminal history / background check which is an additional fee.
